What do you call yourself?

I have many names. What people call me depends on how they view me. Some people see me as a sweatshirt, shirt, jacket, poncho, or even a rug of all things. But the name that most resonates with me is…Baja Hoodie.

So you prefer being called a Baja Hoodie, why is that?

I guess you can say that it became sort of a nickname that stuck. I’m not sure exactly what it meant at first, the word ‘hoodie’ I mean. I know that the word ‘baja’ is a word of Spanish descent describing the fabric of which I was originally made. But, hoodie was a slang word that described my appearance. It was a trendy word at first but then it became part of mainstream vernacular and the nickname never ceased. I like it, I think it’s a catchy name.

You mention that Baja stands for the fabric that makes you…you. Can you describe that in a little more detail?

Sure. The authentic brands, the ones that stay true to what I represent and who I am,  utilize Eco-yarn, a fabric made of 100% cotton from recycled T-Shirt mills. That means I’m not only soft, breathable, and durable, but I also represent a purpose, to try to conserve what the earth makes, to be environmentally conscientious.

Describe what it’s like to wear you?

How can I really answer that question? That’s like asking you, ‘what do people feel when they’re around you?’ All I can go on is what observations I make of the people that wear me. I can tell a difference from when they’re wearing something else to when they put me on. It’s like their state of relaxation changes, maybe not immensely. I don’t want to over-dramatize the experience. I’m not a sleeping pill or a sedative. But I can tell that people look more comfortable when they wear me. Perhaps it’s like that feeling I hear people talk about when they first get under the covers in their bed after a long day. People look relaxed to wear me. I mean, think about what people wear for most of the day on a working day.  For women, it’s often something tight; more rigid fabric so that it won’t wrinkle too easily. And in many social settings, the wearer is more concerned about how they look, remaining fashionable over comfort which might mean, for example, they’d rather wear something with short sleeves even when they’re cold. So, when they get home and they’re not as concerned with style they’ll quickly change into something more comfortable, like me.

We concluded Part I of this exclusive interview with the Baja Hoodie in which we talked about the origin, name, and textile of the Baja Hoodie. My last question in our previous interview led you into talking about what distinguishes you as an article of clothing. Your answer about comfort, leads to my next question, are you more about comfort than style? Are you just the homebody sweatshirt people like to wear when they don’t want to do anything but cuddle up on the couch and watch T.V?

I’m definitely not just restricted to couch cuddle time. I can tell you that. Do you not know the places I’ve been, and the times I’ve been a part of in history? I was a part of the fashion of the civil rights movement. The hippies wore me in the 60s and they wear me now. I’ve been to Woodstock, three days of peace of music. I’ve been to Washington DC outside the White House and the Washington Monument. I’ve been a part of rallies and riots, boycotts and festivals. I’ve seen the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of the United States of America, worn by Californian surfers. After spending the morning on the waves they’d wear me to get dry, stay warm, and seek cover from the sun. I’ve been a part of nearly every age group from children and adolescents, college students, adults, and retirees. You name it, I’ve been worn. So, how does something gain so much popularity without being considered stylish? People like how they look when they wear me. They seem to believe that when they wear me they look and feel good. Style is based on perception. The fact that I’ve transcended so many generations and cultures speaks for itself. And yes, I can be worn with the very pants and shoes you have on now. A navy blue would actually be very nice if you ask me.

You name it, and it’s been made. I can nearly account for every color of the spectrum. Think about it, what other article of clothing can make that claim? Who else can say they’ve been manufactured in virtually every color? Not many.  And in terms of design, I come in stripes and solids; vertical stripes with usually contrasting colors. A common design is to have your color of choice, accented with black stripes. But, you can also buy me in one color where the stripes are different shades of the same color. I come in multi-colors as well. The Rasta Baja Hoodie is one of my most popular designs and consists of the Rastafarian colors of red, green, and gold. People of all ages and ethnic groups love to wear these colors for its look and what it stands for. What has also gained notoriety in the last few years is the Rugby Style Baja Hoodie. You see, I am current and generational at the same time. I’m like the fashion equivalent to Bon Jovi whose success brings music hits to each of the last 4 decades. Likewise, the Baja Hoodie has been worn by many in the last 50 years.
